I know I’m always happy when I receive word of how my partner was able to help relieve a burn victim, or restore sight. LifeSource provides education and brings awareness about the opportunity to save lives, particularly for people who may need a kidney transplant or a liver transplant. They’ll let me know by saying, “Will you please ask Mary to walk them down at the rainbow bridge?” And most of the time, I just say, “Yeah, Mary, is there waiting for them already.” Education about LifeSource Even now, people will email or call me when their loved one or their particular pet has passed on. ![]() Mary and I believed in magic, synchronicity, and divine presence. When she passed, she became an organ donor, which means she continues to rescue not just animals, but also humans. She had this way of helping my family, this community. Walker, MN, Red Lake Nation, Rochester, and which was really wonderful for me, just spending time with her at her job. She started MN’s feral cat trap and release programs that travelled throughout the state. Her life was the 4-legged, cats and dogs, and I tried to support her work, volunteering for her. She was a registered organ donor, and she continues to live in other people’s lives simply because she was an organ donor. My name’s Melvin and I’m here because my life partner Mary passed away. I earned my associate’s degree in physical therapy and my bachelor's degree in kinesiology. In 2004, I helped start Place’s fitness center.Melvin, why don’t you tell us a little bit about who you are and your partner, Mary? My wife, Theresa, and I have three children. In my free time, I enjoy biking, camping, and spending time with my family. Making our seniors feel special is what gets me up in the morning. A sign in my office describes my approach: The most powerful leadership tool you have is your own personal example. I like knowing I make a difference in residents’ lives. When it comes to resident safety and quality customer service, I think critically to make the best possible decision for everyone. On my team, I’m known for being a reliable (and funny) person who does what I say I’ll do. On a daily basis, I help residents with non-medical issues, host family meetings, and act as a liaison between residents, team members, and outside care providers. Now, I serve as the resident services manager at Walker Place. Years later, I still love working with seniors. The next year, I joined the physical therapy team. My journey with Walker Methodist began in 1994, when I had a clinical rotation in physical therapy assistant (PTA) school. I earned my associate's degree in gerontology and family services, as well as a bachelor’s degree in public relations. When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two adult sons, reading with my book club, and baking. I want others to feel special when I talk with them, from team members to residents. I’m known for following up with others, and I love remembering residents’ names and something about them. I lead our team so that our residents receive the best customer service and care possible. On a daily basis, I work directly with our directors to ensure processes and services are running efficiently. ![]() My past experience in resource development, community relations, fundraising––all serving older adults in some way––gives me a unique insight into the landscape of senior living. I joined the team at Place in 2021. I began volunteering at my hometown’s senior community in eighth grade and fell in love with the residents and hearing their stories. Through that experience, I knew I had found my passion. ![]() I’ve been working with seniors since I was a teenager.
